2016 MASTER CLASSES

Professional artists will offer student participants a series of workshops in Applied Theatre, Devised Work, Public Speaking, Movement, Dramaturgy, and Creative Play.

“Applied Theatre Practices” w/ Shamilia McBean

With the notion of play & perspective at the center of our experience, we will explore selected applied theatre activities and devising tactics to build original theatre based on emerging themes from the collective. Throughout the process, we will share our work, reflect on our experiences and, perhaps, build new understanding in community!

Tuesday, September 6 | 1-4pm

“Public Speaking” w/ Rebecca Martin

Participants will learn techniques to prepare the body to be present, to unhook from fear, and to perform from a place of relaxation and confidence. Led by Visiting Assistant Professor in Theatre at Middlebury and One-on-One Performance Coach, Rebecca Martin, this workshop aims to teach participants how to be their most authentic selves while exuding confidence in both performance and every day interactions.

Wednesday, September 7 | 10am-11:20pm

“A Dramaturg Squints” w/ Ben Fainstein

Using examples of historic shifts in the evolution of playwriting, Associate Artist Benjamin Fainstein will offer an introduction to reading work with an eye on dramatic structure. Students will then have the opportunity to engage in a Q&A forum about the role of the dramaturg in the landscape of American theatremaking.

Wednesday, September 7 | 11:30am-1pm

“Improvisational Play” w/ Maree ReMalia

In this movement lab, participants will be led through explorations informed by dance and theater-based improvisational structures and somatic practices to offer tools for participants to arrive at new discoveries, increase sensory awareness, engage the voice, generate movement material, and consider composition in playful and inquisitive ways. Led by Middlebury College Mellon Interdisciplinary Choreographer, Maree ReMalia.

Thursday, September 8 | 4-6pm

“Le Jeu (Games)” w/ Julia Proctor

Through group games and improvisation, students will explore their personal relationship to the joy of being onstage. What is theatre if not play? Adapted from exercises from master clown teachers Christopher Bayes and Philippe Gaulier.

Friday, September 9 | 10am-1pm
